Basement Phil (Phillip Well) presents “The History of Rave show” every Thursday from 8pm – 10pm.
The Basement label was started up in 1990 and was run from the Record Basement shop in Reading. The label was run by Phillip Well (aka Basement Phil).
The main artists on the label include Jack Smooth, Basement Phil, Wax Doctor, Kev Bird, DJ Mayhem, Top Buzz, Alex Reece, Donovan Bad Boy Smith, Alex Hazzard, Spencer T, Loftgroover, Roger Johnson, Sentinel aka Photek, Intensity aka Source Direct, Peshay, Inner Visions aka J Majik, Subject 13, Architex & Dune.
One of the things that set Basement apart from the rest was the distinctive sound of the early releases 3 – 35, courtesy of Jack Smooth’s engineering and co-production. ‘Jungle Techno’ is a phrase drawn from the label, with the phrase credited to Mikee B (one third of Top Buzz) who once famously commented
that a Basement Records tune he was listening too, had sounds that were actually similar to those in a jungle, mixed with Detroit influenced soundscapes.
The label was a big favourite with most DJ’s throughout the Rave Years and DJs such as Top Buzz, Grooverider, Mickey Finn, Ratty, Tango, Swan-e, Phantasy, Kenny Ken, DJ SS, Seduction, Slipmatt, Loftgroover, Colin Dale, Colin Faver, Frankie Valentine, Stu Allan, Mark XTC and Keith Suckling were often heard playing several Basement releases in every set.
When the label switched to DnB it was championed by LTJ Bukem, Fabio & Grooverider, Doc Scott & Peshay.
Labels affiliated with legendary in house producer Jack Smooth were Sound Entity and Smooth Recordings and he had a behind the scenes influence on labels such as Legend Records, Symphony Sound and Sinister Recordings and many more including the Rave Anthem ‘Trip to Trumpton’.
After the peak of the Rave Scene in 1993 the Basement label was one of the first to shift to releasing the more experimental side of Jungle, the genre now known as ‘Drum N Bass’ throughout the mid 90’s before closing down in 1997.
The label was relaunched in 2000 and since then there have been a few releases and a Basement Classics series of reissued Rave and DnB tunes.

I started out in the rave scene back in 1990 and NYE 1991 saw me attend my first rave at the Eclipse Club, Coventry which changed my life forever!!
By 1993 I had started mixing and had some involvment in producing a track on 2EZ Recordings label. During the mid to late 1990s I was involved in the Gusto free parties in and around the Midlands area of the country. Sadly in 1997 I was burgled and, with the exception of my Happy Hardcore collection, I lost everything. By 1999 and now living in Brighton, with the help of some friends I started playing Drum & Bass at some of the local pubs and clubs including The Gladstone and No Man’s an Island.
The early 2000s saw me fall out of the scene for a considerable amount of time as a result of some personal life issues at the time and it wasn’t until 2015 when i joined the Facebook page “Long Live Beautifully Crafted Jungle” (LLBCJ) that i leapt back into the scene, purchasing my first set of Technic’s 1210 MK3D.
I joined Onlyoldskoolradio.com back in January 2017 and have progressed to having a weekly 2 hour show on Saturdays from 10pm and working alongside Steve Payne (Distur3d) and John “FlavRjay” Conlon in running Only Drum & Bass Wedesdays, the last three Wednesdays of each month.
On 31st August 2018 I can be heard playing at the first ever The Jungle_list presents Pressure in London. More information can be found here https://www.facebook.com/events/1050279428464747/
The main genres I play are Old Skool, 93 Darkness, both older and newer Drum & Bass as well as some Liquid D&B too. If you would like to book me for an event please contact me via my Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/clint.ryan.129.
Music is my passion and I take great pride in my work. I feel lucky to make a living doing what I love while creating a special day for you and your guests.
I was born in London and House music has always been a huge part of my life. At 16, I purchased my first set of turntables. I spent hours a day spinning vinyl and things quickly progressed. Before I knew it, I found myself performing for private events and birthdays.
I am more recently mostly known in the Algarve for my performances at the famous sunset parties at Izzy’s Beach Bar, where I was the resident DJ from 2012-15. I also spent two years performing weekly at the prestigious Conrad Hotel’s Gusto Restaurant, mixing a selection of chillout tunes for the guests. In the summer of 2016, I took a residency at Breeze in the beautiful resort of Vale do Lobo performing for the weekly sunset parties.
This year (2017), I had the pleasure of performing at some of the most exclusive spots in Quinta do Lago, including The Shack, Ko Ko Beach, and more. I was also honoured to be invited to perform for the annual August boat party hosted by The Lounge in Vale do Lobo
FLavRjay is a resident DJ with The Energy Collective Dublin, running a night called OldSkool FLavR’s focusing on all things OldSkool & Jungle/DnB.
FLavRjay also hosts radio shows: on UDMI Radio presenting the OldSkool FLavR’s, Phever Radio Dublin presenting BreakBeat FLavR every second Thursday 22.00-00.00 GMT, a monthly on After Dark Radio, last Saturday of the month called Speaker Box 22.00-00.00 GMT, Only Drum ‘n’ Bass and also a regular on OnlyOldSkool Radio.
FLavrjay started raving in 1992 in Dublin but had a strong passion for the early 90s UK Hardcore Rave scene and would religiously shop in the Abbey Mail Dublin buying OldSkool breaks or Hardcore mix tapes. The vinyl obsession started in 1994 and still continues to this day.
His preferred style of music is Jungle/D&B & OldSkool Rave/Hardcore, but he often takes a trip down memory lane spinning old skool house & techno witnessed at iconic nights such as The Asylum, Sides DC, Ormond Multimedia Centre, Columbia Mills and all the big Raves at the Point Depot and around Ireland in the early 90s.
FLavRjay got his first DJ’ing opportunity at the Purple Onion Night Club in Dame Street Dublin in 1996 and went on to play at various other venues such as the Da Club, McGraths, OMMC Dublin, before progressing to putting on nights in Drogheda, Co Louth from 1999. More recently he has enjoyed spinning his tunes in Switch, The Voodoo Lounge, Wiley Fox, Fibbers and TurksHead in Dublin. In 2016 FLavRjay was part of the EC DJ crew playing at Hotbox Gathering and Life Festival Ireland. FLavRjay played a Jungle set at The first Irish Official Outlook Party in Dublin 2017 and HotBox Gathering 2017.
More recently playing at events like ‘Tranquility Base ‘ and ‘ Dubplate Wars ‘ in the Midlands and for Dreamscape at ‘ Get Smashed pt 2.
DJ Chris Groove
I got into rave and hip hop around 1992/93 when I was 11, got my first turntables in 1996 when I was 14 and started playing out in and around Bristol in about 1999/00.
In 2004/5 I started studying turntablism and by 2010 was entering local DJ battles. In 2011 I was a semi finalist in the DMC UK battle for supremacy in London and had honour of performing, battling and being judged by the Xecutioners who have been a massive inspiration to me.
I have held residencies at a few Bristol D&B nights including Shoot the Freak and Intuition, and I’ve played at a fair few other nights over the years. I have held down numerous radio shows on several internet stations including Headrushdnb, OnlyOldSkool, DV8 Radio, Sensei FM and I am looking forward to my new show on After Dark Radio!
First came across the rave scene in his home town of Hertford in 1989 when played a tape from Sunrise FM by a mates older brother, and was hooked from then via pirate radio as was only 10 at the time! Started buying records in 1990 from various stores, but got serious in late 1991 when he got his first set of belt drive turntables and mixer.
By 1992 he was a regular at local Parliament Records, owned and run by Rob Haigh (Omni Trio) and got to know the other regulars such as 2 Bad Mice, Rhodesy, Nookie and a few of the more local pirate DJ’s at the time, and constantly locked all weekend to the pirates at the time- Weekend Rush, Defection, Kool, Pulse and local Mad FM to name a few.
Fast forward to the mid 90’s and the Technics 1210’s arrived, skills had been aquired and guest shows followed by regular shows on pirates such as Network FM, Perception, Rude and Impact started happening, and by the end of the 90’s he had appearances at numerous events- Jungle Warfare, Beatz and Club Innovation to name a few.
By 2003 Shadowplay had moved from his hometown to Brighton, opening a record shop there and establishing himself on the local scene playing at events like Sabotage, Carbon and Metalheadz, and pirates like Profile, Phonic and Codesouth- before he pretty much retired from the scene in 2007 after closing down the shop to concentrate on raising his young family.
Again, fast forward to 2015, and good friend and up-coming producer Vital Link persuaded DJ Shadowplay to put in a guest appearence on his radio show playing old skool jungle, and again the bug hit, spurring him to come out of retirement and start his own show playing old skool on onlyoldskoolradio.com every Friday and Saturday. 2016 saw a family holiday turn into a chance semi-tour of spain, and an equally chance phone call with Mark X from Kemet Records led to Shadowplay being drawn back into the new jungle scene again fully, and leading to his first vinyl release when he collaborated with Vital Link on ‘The New Dawn EP’ (Kemet). Now involved with Infrared Records, you can catch Shadowplay every Friday and Saturday on radio, as well as upcoming events.
I was signed for the legendary Bass Generator records a well known and well established record label and business based in the UK, but things didn’t work out, so currently looking for a new agent. I will be playing Oldskool Hardcore from 1990-1993 and then Hardcore Techno, Acid Techno, Gabba + various other forms of Hardcore.
I’ve been DJ’ing since I was 17 and I love Hardcore, Rave, Drum and Bass and Trip Hop. I’m into Scratching and Turntablism and tried to style myself similar to DJ Hype who was a massive influence for me in the early days. I played on a lot of Pirate stations in the 90’s and have spun at some pretty good Raves all over the UK. I love my Darkside Hardcore and DNB and collect a lot of Vinyl from 1993. I’ve recently bought Serato but will never use CDJ’s as I love mixing and scratching on Technics. It’s more of a hobby now but I still love playing out when I can. All my mixes are live without the use of Synch Buttons or key mixing, Keep it real you crazy kids!
I’ve been raving since the late 80s – the 1880s!! My first club night was at Dungeons, where I fell in love with the music & the people, I still go out raving now – putting the Old into Old Skool!! Back in the day, I loved Oakenfold, Emerson, Dean Thatcher, Fabio & I still love Justin Robertson. I try to create the atmosphere of the early days through my residencies on stations like RadioactiveFM, Rokagroove Radio and Only Old Skool Radio playing Old Skool House, Tribal and Techno – Raver til I die!!!
I started DJing after getting a set of 1210’s way back in 1992 after going to clubs such as Sterns. Since then I have been playing a whole range of genres like, Oldskool, DnB, Hardcore, Jungle, Trance and House. You’ll normally find me playing at 10pm each week on the Techno Tuesday night.
have been a DJ/MC from the age of 11 1/2 and have played a wide range of music. Now a producer from 2001 and have some releases on Red Alpha Records DnB/J Tek. I have been fortunate to work alongside the likes of Zinc, Nicky Blackmarket, Grooverider, Roni Size & Simon Bassline Smith to mention a few, i currently use my time wisely & produce as much as possible. Claim to fame, performing in front of 243.000 people in Santa Cruz Tenerife. Moto don’t let your head swell even if you’re doing well!
Mark’s journey in music began in 1993 when he stumbled upon a Carl Cox tape whilst at a friend’s house and was instantly hooked. As the years went on the music progressed from break beat hardcore to UK hardcore, but he always felt that there was something missing. He always seemed to be searching for that something extra until he had his first experience of Hardcore Techno via a Dj Fergus tape. From then on, he was firmly focused on the genre. He was spending a lot of time with like-minded individuals, who even at an early age already had decks andwere mixing. After many months if not years of studying, he made the decision to start to try and master the art of mixing. He purchased his first set of Omnitronic belt drives and began to build up a collection of vinyl.
In 2009, he made a life decision to go and serve in the armed forces, which meant for the time being music and DJing had to take a back seat. After serving 5 years, he came out raring to go and instantly began mixing again in the digital era.
As DJ MPEP, he began playing a regular slot on radio show called Techno Tuesdays. He got his first break soon in 2014 when he was handed his debut at Oblivion Underground Events: Oblivion Underground. From there, he went from strength to strength performing at Soldiers of Core and Hell is Hard.” A residency at Oblivion Underground soon followed, where he performed at some of the largest events the UK had to offer.
In 2016, Mark made a very conscious decision, to follow a burning passion inside, this was Trance. He had already began learning the Piano and delving into Cubase. After 2 years of studying many forms of Trance, he felt ready to begin his journey in the melodic world of Trance. He set up a podcast show “Journey in Trance” which features a monthly episode, ranging across the entire BPM spectrum. Using his extensive mixing range, coupled with his 18 years of mixing experience, we’re excited to announce the dawn of a new era….Ladies and Gentlemen, we give you DJ Delectation.
Played for Section 47 Sound Systems in London from 93-2k+ also resident at Club Babble Stoke Newington, various Squat/private parties. Residency Techno Tuesday on Onlyoldskool.
First started djing back in 1992 i got into the rave scene at a early age at 15 back in 1990 Id say i like and DJ every type of music as there’s always choons you like in any style of music – such as >Acid House/Techno/Progressive/Electro/Jungle/Hardcore/Hardhouse/Gabba/Hardstyle/Piano House/Trance/Electro and if I mist a few off.. its cos I like it all.
I started producing choons in 98 but nothing to serious just fun its the DJ side of things what makes me buzz.
Played at many venue’s and held many residencies all over the UK, Transmission and Pleasure to name a couple, also played on a number of Radio Stations through out my time.
Oldskool till I die Oi Oi
DSP or Digital Sound Processor found his way into the underground scene at the young age of 11 after starting with Rap. He got his first turntables at 12 and has never stopped since. Starting so young he started working on the market selling Handbags and later on tape packs for a local record shop and was able to buy records every week from 1992 onwards. Having a vast collection of Jungle, Hardcore, Hiphop, soul, funk reggae and many other types of music could only lead one way and that was production. Starting off at school he self-taught himself the Akai and quickly developed a love for engineering and creating music.
DSP has been producing jungle since 1994 with his first release in 1997 with at the time underground jumpup hit the DON. going under the names, Leo, MK2, and DSP since 1999 he has been making music for labels such as Banging tunes and Skeleton Recordings. Future solo works are due soon and future collaborations with Sicknote and Programs in memory.
Cooking up not only music but loving food comes as another interest of Leo who is always in the kitchen and showing his creations on Instagram.
